About Universidad de las Américas, Puebla
La Universidad de las Americas, Puebla (UDLA) is located in Cholula, a suburb of the city of Puebla, in southern Mexico. Cholula has long served as a city of cultural and economic importance on both a regional and an international level, dating back to the times of the Aztecs and the Mayans. Cholula is most known for being home to the site of the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest man-made pyramid and monument by volume in the world. Blending together cultural events, modern and traditional foods, and high-quality academics, UDLA is one of the top private universities in Mexico.
UDLA offers exchange students the option of taking 1) Spanish language and culture classes, 2) subject classes taught in Spanish, and 3) a limited number of subject classes offered in English. Students may study at UDLA for a semester or an academic year.
Program Information
A. Eligibility Requirements
- All majors welcome
- Be a TAMU student for at least one semester prior to application
- Attend TAMU for at least one full semester after the exchange
- Have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
- Have Spanish language proficiency (written and oral)

- Have a minimum Junior classification by beginning of exchange; can be a Sophomore at the time application

B. The Program
Typically, students interested in studying at UDLA desire to improve their Spanish language skills and expand their knowledge of Mexican/Hispanic culture. However, students with an Advanced or Superior-level of Spanish may take any course offered at UDLA for which they meet the pre-requisites. Students will earn a minimum of 12 credits each semester. Interested students can take:
- Spanish as a second language courses ranging from the Beginner to the Superior level
- A select number of courses taught in English
- Advanced and Superior level students only: A wide variety of courses taught in Spanish

C. Housing
Students typically stay in on-campus university housing, although there a limited number of home stays available. Students residing on campus will be placed in a suite which they will share with 7 Mexican students. The rooms within the suite are shared (2 students per room). Suites are equipped with a kitchen, living room, bathroom/shower facilities, and washer/dryer.

D. Costs
One of the benefits of participating in a reciprocal exchange is their affordability. Overall costs are comparable to studying in College Station with the main difference in costs coming from travel related expenses.
Please keep in mind that because you are enrolled at A&M, your tuition and fees will be paid at A&M just as if you were taking classes on campus. Housing is paid directly to UDLA upon arrival at the university. Additionally, students will be provided with the necessary information for them to make arrangements for all other expenses. A cost breakdown is provided in the program brochure in the helpful links section.
As soon as you decide to participate in a study abroad program, you will want to look into the funding available. Texas A&M Scholarships designated specifically for study abroad include: The Study Abroad Fellowship and the International Education Fee Scholarship. More information on funding opportunities is available at http://studyabroad.tamu.edu/financial_resources.asp and http://studyabroadfunding.org.

Student Quote
"My experience in Mexico was outstanding. I witnessed a culture that has many beautiful aspects that I would like to adopt in my own way of living, I dramatically improved my Spanish proficiency, and I formed valuable friendships. As a result of my time in Mexico, I am planning to move to Mexico City upon graduation to pursue a job incorporating my language skills. I firmly believe that every university student should study abroad. The personal evolution is priceless and the experiences are unforgettable."
